Hisorty for educators
A free history game that makes chronology stick. Students place events on a timeline, argue about the order, and see what was happening in other parts of the world at the same time. No accounts, no installs, no cost.
Why it works in class
- Chronology by doingEvery card asks "before or after?", so students build a mental timeline instead of memorising lists of dates.
- A world viewThe Classic deck mixes 1,150 events from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, from the Bronze Age to today.
- Sources includedEvery Classic card links to a source for its year, a natural start for a question or a short research task.
- Talk about historyIn party games everyone guesses on the same card, and anyone who disagrees can call "Well actually...". That starts discussions.
Ideas for lessons
Warm-up: the daily puzzle
Put today's puzzle on the projector and let the class decide where each card goes. It takes a few minutes, it is the same for everyone, and the archive holds every earlier puzzle.
Class quiz: party mode
Start a party game and share the invite link or four-letter code. Up to 8 players join on their own phones or laptops; with a bigger class, play in teams that share a device.
Your unit only
Filter the Classic deck by era, region or category, for example only the Islamic Golden Age, only Asia, or only technology and discovery, to practise the period you are teaching.
Students make a deck
Let students research a topic and turn it into a deck: each event needs a year, a short description and a source. It practises research and source skills, and the class plays the result.
Homework and revision
Students can play the archive or a deck you made at home, on any phone or computer.
Make a deck for your lesson
A deck is a small file with your events and their years, for any topic: the Dutch Golden Age, the history of your town, the Cold War, or the timeline of a novel you are reading. In the game, open How to contribute for the deck guide. It explains the format and gives a prompt you can paste into an AI assistant with your own idea to draft a deck; check the dates, then load the file in a solo or party game. With a free account you can share it by link, or publish it for other teachers, labelled with its language.
Embed Hisorty in your site or learning platform
Paste this code into any web page or platform that allows iframes, such as a school website, a wiki or a page in your learning platform:
<iframe src="https://hisorty.nl/?embed" width="100%" height="720" style="border:0" allow="fullscreen" title="Hisorty history timeline game"></iframe>
To open straight on the daily puzzle, use https://hisorty.nl/daily?embed as the address. Embedded games show no ads.
Privacy
Students play without an account. Scores and achievements stay in their own browser, and a party game only uses the nickname a player types in. Read the full privacy policy.
